While a Senior at Ole Miss, Erin Young had the opportunity of a lifetime, to open her own business, Olive Juice Gifts on the Oxford Square. After a successful 10 years in the gift shop business, her marriage to Council Young and their first baby girl, they decided in 2021 to open OJK, A Children’s Boutique. They are happily married and now co-owners of OJK. As Erin shared, “This was not a planned venture, but it has been the best and most exciting challenge that we didn't know we needed.”

Lindsey Mitchell has spent most of her life in the retail business. Shop Mary Bee, an all online clothes and accessories boutique, was inspired by her grandmother, Mary Lee. Lindsey shared, “My grandmother Mary Lee Beck is the inspiration for the name and for the ideas behind it. As girls, my sister and I spent hours at her house, watching her sew beautiful skirts, dresses, pillows, drapes, etc. She taught my sister and I the importance of presenting yourself in all ways in the best way possible. Since 2010, Sarah Kathyrn Dossett has been helping locals, Ole Miss students and visitors use their creative sides to both create art and experience art at her studio, Studio Whimzy. Sarah Kathyrn is a Mississippi native and graduated with a B.F.A. in Printmaking from the University of Mississippi. She recently shared, “I wanted to stay in Mississippi and teach art and that is truly why the studio exists.” And we are so glad she did!

Who knew taking on a new business during Covid would actually bring people together? Elizabeth Speed purchased Oxsicles from Lauren Klimentz right before the pandemic began in 2020. Elizabeth shared, “It was a rocky first popsicle season but I made it work by doing the Oxford Community Farmer's Market, continuing to build my retail locations and hosting neighborhood pop-ups for small outdoor events. This really helped me to get to know more people in town and bring Oxsicles to them in their neighborhoods.” Our neighborhood hosted a “pop-up” during Covid, and it was such a treat to see our neighbors and let our kids (and adults) connect over delicious pops!

Kate Newman has been in the retail business since she was 17 years old. She always knew she wanted to open her own clothing store, and after a decade of living in Oxford, she was able to make that dream a reality. Style Assembly opened in August 2021. But that wasn’t enough. Kate wanted to give back, so she was able to land a teaching job at Ole Miss in the IMC (Integrated Marketing Communications) department where she could share her talents and love of retail with other aspiring students. Chip Brown, an Ole Miss Alum, moved his family to Oxford in 2019 and opened DeltaDog the same year. With a background in dog training in the Mississippi Delta during his college years, he opened his first luxury pet resort in Memphis in 2007. He wanted to bring the same luxury accommodations and fun activities to all the dogs of Oxford and Ole Miss, while also building trust and relationship with both customers and their dogs. Chip shared, “DeltaDog customers will enjoy peace of mind knowing their dogs are staying in first-class accommodations and receiving the highest level of individual care and attention, just like they do at home!”
