Fair Housing month is celebrated in April of each year in honor of the Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, or the Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act (FHA) was passed in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King's roots in fair housing can be traced back to the Chicago Freedom Movement.

Caitlin Magnuson, a Water Valley native, and her husband Joe, a Washington State transplant, moved their family to Water Valley in the summer of 2022 with the dream of putting down roots and owning their own business. Annually, every Continuum of Care in the nation performs a Point-in-Time (PIT) Count of all people experiencing homelessness in a shelter and on the street in the last 10 days of January. The PIT count offers the ability to monitor trends in homelessness across a geography, support local efforts in ending homelessness by identifying unmet needs and characteristics of persons experiencing homelessness, and identify areas where the development of housing and supportive service programs is needed.
