Home Security Spotlight: Protecting Your Home from a Break-In

Spring Break in Oxford is a great time for families with school age children to get away, for college students to travel or visit home, and for locals to enjoy a quiet, slow paced Oxford. Unfortunately, it is also prime time for home break-ins. Thieves know that many people in our small town are taking advantage of the time off school and that there will be a lot of empty homes in the Oxford area.

So how do we protect our homes from thieves? There is a great realtor.com article that gives us some tips on how to protect our property.

  1. Consider getting an alarm system or some form of surveillance system

    • A recent study states that homes without alarm systems and surveillance are 300% more likely to be targeted by burglars.

  2. Put your packages and mail on hold or have a friend or neighbor pick them up

    • When mail and packages pile up, it is obvious that no one is at home.

  3. Overgrown trees and shrubs

    • More foliage means more places for burglars to hide.

  4. Outdated or unsecured doors and windows

    • Weak doors and windows are an easy entry point for burglars.

  5. No outdoor lights

    • Motion activated outdoor lights can be highly effective at scaring away unwanted visitors.

  6. Isolated properties

    • We love our country oases, but pay extra attention to securing your home with things like gates, cameras, and lighting.

  7. Letting your neighbors or friends know you will be out of town or hire a house sitter

    • It is always great to have someone keeping an eye on your home while you are away.

Lastly, don’t hesitate to call your local police or sheriff’s office if you see something that does not seem right, they are always happy to help.

Have a great Spring Break everyone!!
