April is Fair Housing Month

Fair Housing month brings awareness to the increased efforts to end housing discrimination and raises awareness of fair housing rights.

Fair Housing month is celebrated in April of each year in honor of the Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, or the Fair Housing Act. The Fair Housing Act (FHA) was passed in the wake of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King's roots in fair housing can be traced back to the Chicago Freedom Movement.

During Fair Housing month we honor and encourage the principle that in the United States of America, no one should be denied housing because of who they are. Fair Housing Month is a time to renew our commitment to expanding home ownership opportunities and fostering inclusive communities.

Realtors are required to follow a code of ethics when conducting business.  Article 10 of the National Association of REALTORS® Code of Ethics provides that, "REALTORS® shall not deny equal professional services to any person for reasons of race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”

Do you believe your rights may have been violated? If so, your Realtor can help put you in touch with the appropriate people to discuss your situation and possibly file a complaint. Or you can contact the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development for more information. There are time limits on when allegations can be filed so you should report any housing discrimination as soon as possible.
