Neighborhood Philanthropy: Commodores Care
Oxford is host to some wonderful non-profit organizations that provide for our community in so many ways. We want to provide a glimpse of these organizations each month. In 2019, a group of Lafayette County school district parents noticed a need within the schools. Nurses and Counselors needed assistance in meeting their students’ day to day needs while at school. So this parent group created Commodores Care, whose primary mission is for each child to feel adequate while at school so that they can perform well, be at their best and shine.

Homestead Exemption – Why File?
Homestead Exemption gives home owners a tax break in the state of Mississippi. You can only file homestead on one property, your main residence, and you must file January 2-April 1 in the Lafayette county Chancery building (the Assessor/Tax Collector’s Office).

Neighborhood Philanthropy: CASA of North Mississippi
Oxford is host to some wonderful non-profit organizations that provide for our community in so many ways. We want to provide a glimpse of these organizations each month. Thanks to the efforts of Erin Smith, founding Executive Director, CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) North Mississippi began its footwork initially in 2017 but became a program in 2018. They have been serving Lafayette county children by training volunteers to advocate for children in court proceedings to ensure that every child is in a safe and permanent home.

Where was your first date? Well, AJ & Claire Kiamie fondly remember theirs at the once popular Two Stick restaurant that was located in the back of the now Lyric Theatre on the Oxford Square. Both Angie Sicurezza and Nick Reppond have been in the restaurant business since they were 15 years old. Even their love affair began in a restaurant, City Grocery Restaurant Group in Oxford, as they both began working for John Currence in 2009. Their love for each other, good food, community and a fantastic building in Taylor, Mississippi inspired them to open GRIT in 2016. Oxford is host to some wonderful non-profit organizations that provide for our community in so many ways. We want to provide a glimpse of these organizations each month. In 2010, while reading the Oxford Eagle, Sherry Williams-Jenkins saw an announcement for a community discussion on homelessness in the Oxford and Lafayette county area. By 2011, Sherry and others had created a vision and mission that became the Doors of Hope Transition Ministries, a 501C3 organization. And after a two-year break, their primary fundraiser, the Doors of Hope Holiday House Tour, is returning on Saturday, December 3rd and we cannot wait! It’s one of our favorite events in Oxford!
Interior Decorator Spotlight: Inside Discount
This month’s Interior Decorator Spotlight is Inside Discount. In 1983, Jimmy and Connie Sink opened Discount Building Materials in Amory, MS. The Oxford store was opened in 1994 by Jimmy’s son, Cliff, and his wife, Dawn. The store soon became more than just a hardware and building material store due to Dawn’s passion for interior décor and design. Inside Discount was opened in 2002 and has grown tremendously due to the fabulous inventory of home décor available. They are especially known for their Christmas Open House, which is THIS weekend!
