Neighborhood Philanthropy: Commodores Care

Oxford is host to some wonderful non-profit organizations that provide for our community in so many ways. We want to provide a glimpse of these organizations each month. In 2019, a group of Lafayette County school district parents noticed a need within the schools. Nurses and Counselors needed assistance in meeting their students’ day to day needs while at school. So this parent group created Commodores Care, whose primary mission is for each child to feel adequate while at school so that they can perform well, be at their best and shine.

Commodores Care helps to address the needs of the students in many ways. The group holds fundraisers to stock their clothing closet, which is utilized by school nurses and counselors throughout the district on a daily basis. The clothing has been helpful to children who may be without the appropriate size or to children who may have an accident or fall in a mud puddle while at school. They have also provided coats and shoes, as needed. During Fall, Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks, the group sends home extra food and meal vouchers to families that may need it the most. Commodores Care also holds fundraisers like “Car Riders for a Cause”, in which parents can drop off supplies or monetary donations while in car rider line, as well as t-shirt and hat sales.

Commodores Care has a wonderful Board of Directors in place. Molly Harwell, President; Janine Lee, Vice President; Sara Nowell, Secretary; Rebecca Easley, Treasurer; and Whitney Pullen, Social Media Coordinator. This group of ladies’ goal is to keep the clothing closet stocked and the bank account full so that they can continue to provide for the students in the Lafayette county district.

We are so grateful to Commodores Care and their taking action when they noticed a need. Lafayette County school district is fortunate to have such caring and dedicated parents who step in to help both the students and staff at the schools. Please consider donating by Venmo or Paypal @CommodoresCare and be sure to follow them on social media (Facebook/Instagram: Commodores Care) to learn about upcoming fundraisers and needs.
