Neighborhood Business Highlight: Johnston Hill Creamery

Kelly Jeffus turned her cheese-making hobby into a passion that allowed her to open our favorite cheese shop in Oxford, Johnston Hill Creamery. All of their cheese products are made by hand using traditional methods and aged in-house in their 150 square foot cheese cave. With no added preservatives, they only use milk and cream purchased locally from Brown Family Farm.

With a background in restaurants and food styling, Kelly wanted to take her cheese-making hobby to the next level. She took a boot-camp cheese making course in Vermont and Johnston Hill Creamery was opened soon after. Johnston Hill is named after Kelly’s grandparents, Janice and Jimmy Johnston, who instilled the values of hard work, determination and respect that she strives to showcase in each and every product that she creates. Kelly shared, “I come up with all the cheese types. Many are based off traditional methods but I always like to try and add a local Mississippi twist when I can, like with the addition of magnolia leaves in our cheese “Sugar Magnolia”. You can check out her artisanal cheeses here.

You’ve got to pop into her shop to take full advantage of Johnston Hill Creamery’s viewing window where you can get a sneak peek of the future cheeses aging. They also have a lunch menu and catering menu. You can check that out here. We asked Kelly what she loves most about her business and she shared, “This job allows unlimited creativity and the support from our local community has been very heart-warming!”

We ask our Neighborhood businesses how the Oxford and Lafayette county real estate market affects them. Kelly shared, “When Oxford is doing well, all businesses have better success – so we are always rooting for a strong and successful real estate market!”

Johnston Hill Creamery is located at 1503 White Oak Lane, Suite B. It’s open Tuesday-Saturday 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. We are grateful to Kelly and her Johnston Hill Creamery team for providing the Oxford area with specialty cheeses that she creates from the heart. As Avery Aames said, “Life is great. Cheese makes it better.”
