Interior Decorator Spotlight: Something Southern
This month’s Interior Decorator Spotlight is Something Southern. Founded in 1996, Becki Huelse, ASID, opened her full service retail Interior Design Firm and moved to its current location on the Square in 2002. With her husband, Mark, and a team of great staff, they have retail stores in Oxford and Starkville and travel throughout Mississippi and neighboring states. Something Southern can help with any stage of your design project from initial plan review to final furniture layout and fabric coordination. Their main upholstery suppliers, Rowe Fine Furniture and Norwalk, are both USA based and are making great strides in supply chain issues, keeping their warehouse well stocked. Something Southern is the largest Hunter Douglas Window Covering dealer in the state, proudly representing the products since 2004.
We recently met with Mark and Becki in Oxford to ask them 3 questions:
Neighborhood Realty: “What is your process when meeting with a new client?”
Mark & Becki: “We spend time getting to know them and their desire for the space we are designing. We discuss their life style, family, pets etc. and how the home is being used (full-time home, game-day house, parents/college student, retiree, young family). With our years of experience we can quickly narrow the focus, their expectations and budget. Over the years we have developed a large supply network that can work within any reasonable budget. Our focus is on quality furniture and accessories at a fair price.”
Neighborhood Realty: “How do you help someone determine their style?”
Mark & Becki: “We can do this a few different ways - by our initial conversation in person at our showroom or in their home or via phone or Facetime. We also review our display samples in the store, inspirational photographs or pinterest, etc.”
Neighborhood Realty: “What are the most popular styles right now?”
Mark & Becki: “Simple lines on sofas and chairs with a track arm, some with classic flair of tufting or nail heads. Fabrics are still trending to the neutrals, off-white, gray and taupe. For the bold, velvets are making a strong statement in classic blues and greens. The new performance fabrics introduced in the last few years are very popular with the light neutrals. Add pop of color and texture with accent with pillows, accent chairs and bold artwork. Accent pieces of lamps, accessories, and art are still keeping the same simple line trend.”
