Every season creates specific concerns when it comes to home maintenance. Thanks to this Southern Living article, let’s discuss the winter season and what you should do to prepare your home for the cold temperatures.

1. Chimney Cleaning. It’s recommended to clean your chimney once a year. Contact a local chimney sweep to make sure it’s taken care of properly.

2. Protect Outdoor Furniture. Store in a dry place off of the damp ground, if possible. Cover with a tarp to protect.

3. Caulking & Sealing. Check caulking around exterior windows and stores, as well as weather stripping on exterior doors.

4. Winterize the Attic. Attics should always be well insulated, but check to make sure it’s not too tight, allowing soffit vents an opening. Also check for any roof leaks, etc while checking it out.

5. Heat Check. Have your heat pump or furnace serviced.

6. Gutters. Clean out gutters and downspouts regularly.

7. Winterize the Deck. Check for any weathered or decayed boards and replace. Sweep and clean as much as you can while leaves are falling. Also, consider slip-proof treads on any steps.

8. Protect the Pipes. Make sure pipes exposed are covered with foam. Drain the water from outdoor sprinkler systems and garden hoses. Cover the outdoor faucets. Close any outdoor vents. Know where the main water shut-off is located.
