Neighborhood Philanthropy: The Big Event

This month we are highlighting The Big Event. This year’s day of service will take place on March 28th. If you are an organization or individual in the Oxford–Lafayette area, this is your chance to receive help with projects you may need completed.

The Big Event at the University of Mississippi has historically been the largest community service initiative in the university’s history. It highlights one of the many ways Ole Miss students give back to and support the Lafayette–Oxford–University community.

The foundation for The Big Event began with UMSFusion, an annual service program established in 2003 that gave University of Mississippi students the opportunity to volunteer throughout the Lafayette–Oxford–University area. As participation grew each year, it became clear that students were deeply committed to serving and supporting the local community.

After visiting Texas A&M University and observing their large-scale day of service, student leaders and staff at the University of Mississippi were inspired to create a similar event. In 2010, The Big Event was launched by ASB student leaders and the Office of the Dean of Students, marking a new chapter in service at Ole Miss.

In its first year, more than 1,200 students volunteered despite challenging spring storms. By 2012, the event experienced tremendous growth, with over 3,000 students signing up to complete more than 300 community service projects. Today, The Big Event continues to expand its impact while strengthening connections between students and the local community.

Through The Big Event, students have the opportunity to show appreciation to the Oxford and Lafayette County communities that support them during their time at Ole Miss. The program also encourages students to build meaningful relationships with community members and inspires them to remain engaged in volunteer service long after the event concludes.
