Neighborhood Business Highlight: The Oxford Creamery

Owners, Hudson & Lo Magee

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! With its prime location on the Oxford Square, Oxford Creamery is the perfect place to satisfy your ice cream craving! And with Summer just around the corner, you’ll all want to pop in for some cold treats.

Husband and wife team, Hudson and Lo Magee, opened the Oxford Creamery in August of 2019. Hudson shared, “We were moving back south after being in Montana for some years and wanted to open an impactful and fun business in town. We were inspired by the craft ice cream shops that we had seen in different places we had lived (Chattanooga, TN and Bozeman, MT) and knew that something like that would do well in Oxford. The location was one of our biggest motivators. We were lucky enough to find a great spot right off of the Square that has tons of foot traffic and puts us right in the center of everything happening in town. We love this location because almost every visitor coming to town sees us there and wants to come try our ice cream!”

After only 2 years in business, the Oxford Creamery was named Best Ice Cream in Mississippi by Food & Wine. Denver Bridwell, their full-time ice cream chef, creates all of their flavors. Hudson shared, “Denver is a master of the art of ice cream science and creates unique flavors that make people remember us. Ice cream is a blank slate, so we get to have a lot of fun coming up with new flavor ideas!” The Oxford Creamery’s ice cream process is a labor of love and time. They make it all from scratch using local dairy, etc. and they never skip steps or cut corners during the process. It takes two days (sometimes longer) to make each flavor. They love the payoff of hearing their customers say, “This is the best ice cream I have ever had!”

Hudson and Lo shared their favorite parts of opening their business. “Our business has become a central part of the community and we love seeing so many familiar faces come in. Also, the creamery is one of the few places on the square that attracts people from all walks of life. It is really cool to see such a diverse group of people come together and share smiles over ice cream.”

We ask our Neighborhood businesses how the Oxford and Lafayette county real estate market affects them. Hudson shared, “The real estate market has definitely helped our business. A growing and competitive real estate market is just a sign of a great place to live and a thriving community. Our business feels the benefits of more and more people coming to Oxford!”

The Oxford Creamery is located at 309 North Lamar Blvd. It’s open Sunday-Thursday 12:00 pm - 9:00 pm and Friday-Saturday 12:00 pm - 10:00 pm. We are grateful to the Oxford Creamery for serving up new and delicious HOMEMADE ice cream and other cool treats and look forward to seeing locals and visitors enjoying a nice, cool treat this Summer!
