Neighborhood Business Highlight: Tarasque Cucina

Oxford is host to some wonderful restaurants. We all know that. But John and Lauren Stokes have created something different – a space that is supportive and kind to all (both guests and the people they are lucky enough to work with). They have broken down the wall of being disconnected from both your food and the people taking such care to prepare it. That's why the kitchen is the first thing you see, and everything is out in the open. And, their food is pretty fantastic!

John and Lauren Stokes opened Tarasque Cucina on February 12, 2015. They have a combined total of over 45 years of restaurant experience and wanted to open up their own place for years as they knew there was a market for truly delicious food in a welcoming environment. They are located behind Kiamie’s Package Store and their location was the home of Mrs. Kiamie for many years and then AJ and Claire Kiamie, when they were newlyweds. (AJ and Claire own the Sipp and Yugo). Lauren shared, “We LOVE that it is in an old house with such a fantastic Oxford history. John has memories of going bowling at Kiamie Lanes with AJ and then having cookies afterwards in the house where Tarasque now resides. Our tables and countertops are reclaimed bowling alley lanes as a small homage to the Kiamie's. We feel so lucky to have such a special spot.”

We ask our Neighborhood businesses how the Oxford and Lafayette county real estate market affects them. Lauren shared, “Oxford is a retirement community in addition to being the home of the University of Mississippi. It is such a specific joy to have regulars, which only happen when people actually live here. Visitors are a delight and provide excitement, but we thrive on creating lasting relationships with the people who live here. Equally, we adore becoming friends with the students and being a part of their life here. Serving people who buy a home and move here is so special because it means we can truly create the community and environment we want - and which others are looking for as well.”

We are grateful for Tarasque Cucina for both their fabulous Old World comfort food and their dedication to creating a community environment within their restaurant. Be sure to go by and see them at 1611 Jackson Avenue West, order online and pick-up or have Fetcht deliver it right to your door. They are open Wednesday-Saturday 5 pm – 9 pm or Sunday 5 pm – 8:30 pm.
