Interior Decorator Spotlight: Amanda McGown, SummerHouse-Oxford
This month’s Interior Decorator Spotlight is Amanda McGown, an interior designer at SummerHouse in Oxford. SummerHouse opened its doors in Ridgeland, MS 18 years ago and decided to open another store in 2016 in Oxford. SummerHouse is a full service interior design firm with a showroom that showcases about 10% of what’s available to their clients. They have a fantastic fabric and wallpaper library in their store. They strive to offer quality design services and furnishings at various price points. Our feature designer, Amanda McGown, joined the SummerHouse team of Oxford in 2021.
We sat down with Amanda to ask her our 3 questions.
Neighborhood Realty: “How do you help someone determine their style?”
Amanda: “Many clients will have an idea of what they like based on a photo or a series of photos from social media or magazines. I then help them commit to an idea, particularly if the design element is outside of their comfort zone. Sometimes a client just needs to hear that, “Yes, that would look amazing in this space!” If a client comes in that has no idea what they like or where to start, a process of elimination is helpful. I show them pieces of different styles, colors, textures, etc, and I get a good idea of what direction to go from there”
Neighborhood Realty: “What is your process when meeting with a new client?”
Amanda: “It varies with each client and depends on where they are in their project. I handle single pieces needed for a room all the way through ground up construction. My number one goal is always to help my clients create a space that speaks to who they are and one which will well suit their lifestyle. I want them to feel proud of and peaceful in their spaces.”
Neighborhood Realty: “What are the most popular styles right now?”
Amanda: “Everybody loves a swivel! All of my clients are wanting movement in their furniture. I’m also seeing curved lines, lots of texture and pops of color with accessories, art, and spherical pillows. This is also a current trend toward lower profiles, which is a nod to mid-century modern.”
