Choosing a quality mover is a BIG deal and we’re here to share a few tips. *Thanks to moving.com (part of the realtor.com network).

1. A moving inventory is a MUST. A reputable moving company will take inventory of all of your belongings and determine the bulk and weight of your move in person or virtually.

2. Get a thorough walk-through. A good moving company will perform a walk-through and ask questions about what you plan to take from your current home to your new home.

3. Don’t pay a large deposit. Reputable movers will not require a large deposit or cash before moving. You should only pay at delivery.

4. Avoid moving companies with a name switch. Be sure the company has a local address and information about licensing and insurance.

5. Get references for movers. It’s always ok to ask movers for some references.

6. Avoid packing costs. It’s usually much cheaper to pack your own items due to inflated pricing. If you do have the movers pack, ask about the packer’s experience doing so.

7. Beware of extra fees. Always ask about surcharges or possible additional fees that may be incurred.

8. Avoid a blank moving contract. Always get everything in writing – never sign a blank contract.

9. Don’t accept the “guaranteed” quote. Always get an estimate in writing as a contract.

10. Report any problems. You have 9 months to report any problems.

11. Understand moving insurance and valuation protection. All moving companies are required to assume some liability for the goods they transport. Know their protection policy.
